I guess by then I just didn't really care. I'm convinced the good reviews on here were not from people who purchased and read the book.

1. Any student who could take a course from Judith Shapiro would be most fortunate indeed. But he is more a cheerleader than a historian, a partisan for his subject inflating the significance of the Portland's role in various affairs, but offering harsh and sometimes poorly informed judgments of many figures in this history. Impatient readers might want to start the book at the "Overview" section at the end of Chapter 1 (page 29 of the paperback edition).
