The authors include prominent journalists who were often eyewitness observers; academics; a former ambassador to the Soviet Union; and two well-known Russians, physicist Andrei Sakharov and writer Tatyana Tolstaya. After an introductory essay presenting the period under consideration, the excerpts are grouped chronologically. An appendix with writings by and interviews with Gorbachev follows. There is surprisingly little repetition in the 18 excerpts, and in the section on the Cold War, two opposing views are offered. Shapiro once used the phrase "intangible aspects of sustainability"; but she should have introduced her readers to the concept of "livability." "Sustainability" and "livability" should be mentioned together in such discussions.
If China emulates Western behaviors, environmental collapse is inevitable. Great pictures with a variety fit for differing ability levels. So, this is a well-intended effort and probably very effective for the preschool set, but not for advanced elementary or middle school kids.. Every student of environmental policy should read this chapter. It is, in the parlance of today's technology, user friedly.. Only reason I read them all is they were downloaded on my Kindle app while we were in Alaska, it rained for multiple days and we were cabin bound, otherwise they were a little too predictable and sorta pat romance novelishwhich is not my cup of tea.
